Who are Dutiful Daughters™ (and Sainted Sons™)?
As our conscientious geriatric care managers worked with
families to develop life care plans for an aging loved one, it soon
became
apparent that indeed,
we had two clients: the client who experienced the challenges of aging, and the
family member who cared for him or her. More often than not, that family member
providing care was a woman. She was the daughter, granddaughter, daughter-in-law,
wife, sister or niece, and she was in emotional pain. Yes, there are men functioning
as caregivers who are experiencing the same situations, but they handle their
roles differently. Men are pragmatic fixers who prefer stoicism. Women are natural
nurturers who show their emotions freely. Of course, we are generalizing and
perhaps stereotyping, but look at the data and you’ll see a certain reality
about how family caregivers measure up statistically.
It seemed like the children of the elderly needed our help and support, perhaps as much, or in some cases more, than their aging loved ones. And so, Dutiful Daughters™ was formed to be a resource to meet that need and to aid in the arduous role of family caregiver. It is now joined by a growing movement call Sainted Sons developed to address the different coping strategies of caregiving men.
So…what does this all
add up to?
Dutiful Daughters™ or Sainted Sons™ is
an all-day seminar usually sponsored by a facility or community
near you.
It is a one day program broken into four parts:
The keynote speaker is Marsha R. Foley, RN, MBA, and President of Elder Care Advocates, Inc., who sets the tone with humor, compassion, and wisdom on being a Dutiful Daughter™…having been there herself both personally and professionally.
Next, an expert from your local community, such as a prominent geriatric expert, offers some guidance regarding the aging process: what’s normal, what’s not, and how to seek help effectively.
The third segment is a resource fair which offers a range of local senior services such as elder law, home health care services, long term care insurance, physical therapy, professional bill paying services, and massage therapy, just to name a few. Many caregivers are not aware of the vast array of resources available to them and their family members, so this part of the seminar can be especially informative.
The final session of the day is the heart and soul of a Dutiful
Daughters ™
seminar. It consists of a panel representing a variety of family caregivers
who are courageous enough to share their stories with the audience. They are
skillfully facilitated by Marsha Foley, and they discuss the life lessons they
have learned about themselves and their relationship with their aging loved
one.
The result is an uplifting day of celebration and sharing which serves to fortify you as you continue the journey of caregiver.
Many of our hosting communities have been willing to help caregivers
by adding continuing discussion groups at their communities…to
keep the energy going. Please review the following listings to
find the location nearest you offering Dutiful
Daughters™ or
Sainted Sons™ discussion groups as well as the schedule

you, contact us to discuss how we can help you stimulate your
local service providers to meet and support your need.
